Subject:           Language Arts                                                             Grade:  3

Standard:  #2 Reading Comprehension

Key Concept: Understanding cause and effect assists reading comprehension.

Generalization:  Students will be able to identify the cause (why something happened) and effect (what happened) in a given piece of literature.

Background:  Children have read/listened to the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” from the basal series Scott Foresman Reading Volume One, pages 47-67.  Together we have created a chart of the cause and effect relationships found in the story.  Discussion follows about words that tell a reader to look for a cause and effect relationship:  because, so that, since, in order that, if… then, for this reason.

Tiered in content

Tiered according to readiness

Tier I:  (Below grade level) Students will read “Tug, Tug, Tug” An African Folk Tale (leveled reader book 64B).  Students will identify 3 cause and effect relationships found in the story.  Put each cause/effect relationship on different colored index cards and place on T-chart labeled Cause/Effect. “Reader” will briefly summarize the story to the entire class.  “Reporter” will share 2 of the cause/effect relationships found in their story.

Tier II:  (At grade level) Students will read “Crash! Flash!” (leveled reader 78B) Students will identify 4 cause and effect relationships found in the story.  Put each cause/effect relationship on different colored index cards and place on T-chart labeled Cause/Effect. “Reader” will briefly summarize the story to the entire class.  “Reporter” will share 2 of the cause/effect relationships found in their story.

Tier III:  (Above grade level) Students will read Stellaluna. Students will identify 5 cause and effect relationships found in the story.  Put each cause/effect relationship on different colored index card and place on T-chart labeled Cause/Effect.  “Reader” will briefly summarize the story to the entire class.  “Reporter” will share 2 of the cause/effect relationships found in their story.

Assessment:

-         Assess the completed charts to see if students correctly identified the cause (why something happened) and effect what happened) relationships for their respective books.

-         Additional assessment will be done using Practice Book 3.1 page 17 (Teacher Resource book pg. 28.)
