Science : Living Environment 4

Subject:  Science                                                                                            Grade:  3

Standard:  Living Environment   4

Key Concept:  Diseases can be infectious or non-infectious.

Generalization:  Some diseases are caused by germs and some are not.  Diseases caused by germs may be spread to other people.  There are ways to reduce the number of germs that can get into the body or that can be passed on to other people.

Background:  The class has been studying infectious and noninfectious diseases.   In this lesson the students will explore ways people can help lessen the number of disease-causing germs that enter the human body. Students will watch and discuss the video “Germs Make Me Sick.”

Copies of the book, Germs Make Me Sick, and Science and Health text books will be available for students to use as references.   (This is a 3rd grade standard, but the 2nd grade Science text, unit E, focuses on this specific standard, and is a very good resource.)

Tiered in:  product

Tiered according to:  learning style

Tier I:  Kinesthetic

Students will create and present a skit or series of skits, portraying different germs and their attempts to enter a human’s body and the steps the human takes to block the germs’ invasion.

e.g.  One student is a cold germ, one student is a person with a cold, and a third student is a person taking steps to avoid allowing the cold germ to get into his/her body.

Tier II:  Visual

Students will create posters that relate health practices that help prevent the spread of disease.  Each poster will address a specific disease of related group of diseases.

e.g.  A poster could focus on getting immunizations to prevent the spread of measles, mumps, etc.

Tier III:  Linguistic

Students will create crossword puzzles using related vocabulary words and concepts.

This might include such words as infectious, symptom, germs, etc.

Assessment: Products will be assessed based on rubrics provided students at beginning of project.
