Language Arts: Writing Process & Application

Standard:  Standard 4: Writing Process and Standard 5: Writing Application

 

Key Concept:  All writing has a beginning, middle, and end.

 

Generalization: Students will practice sequencing in reading and writing.

 

Background:  The student’s have read the story, “How I Spent my Summer Vacation”; we have discussed the story and have sequenced the story with a Flow map. The teacher will discuss what is expected with each type of product.

Tier I:  (Basic) Do a Flow map with 5 labeled boxes. “Title, First, Second, Third, Finally” Complete the Flow map describing your summer vacation. Use your Flow map to write a one-paragraph postcard describing your summer vacation. Put the events in order using your time order words, which appear in your Flow map. Draw a postcard of your favorite summer activity.

 

 

Tier II:  (Average) Complete a detailed Flow map with at least 6-8 boxes sequencing your summer vacation. Write a friendly letter to your teacher with all the correct parts. (Heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature) In the friendly letter describe your summer vacation using lots of details and in sequential order. Design a collage, at least four pictures, showing your favorite summer activities.

 

 

Tier III:  (Enrichment) First, complete a detailed Flow map with at least 6-8 boxes sequencing your summer vacation.  Next, complete a Double Bubble map comparing and contrasting Wallace’s summer vacation and your summer vacation. Then, write a newspaper article telling how Wallace’s and your vacations were alike and different. Design a picture to go with your newspaper article. 

 

 

Assessment:  Students will complete a Summer Vacation Flow map. Students will complete different writing products, postcard, letter, and newspaper article. They will follow the guidelines outlined in the rubrics.  As a culminating activity, each student will share their product with their classmates.
